MiG-27 fighter jet crashes in India

A MiG-27 “Flogger-D” aircraft of the Indian Air Force crashed in Rajasthan’s Barmer district on Tuesday. Pilot Wing Commander Nishikant Singh ejected on time and was rushed to the Jodhpur’s Military Hospital where his condition was said to be stable and out of danger. The aircraft was on a routine sortie when it crashed near a hamlet, Allawani- Ki- Dhani, 30 km from Barmer, in the Western sector, said defence spokesman Colonel S D Goswami.

The MiG-27 took off at 3.55 pm from Uttarlai air base and crashed immediately after taking off at 3.57 pm at distance of about 3 km from the base.

A Court of Inquiry was ordered into the crash, Goswami said.

The impact of the crash was such that while its debris scattered over a radius of 300 meters and a house near the site was damaged. A young boy reportedly sustained minor injuries, according to eye witnesses.

Villagers, who saw the MiG loosing attitude, informed local administration. Two fire brigades rushed to the spot to douse the fire at the site.
